  NIPCO CAMPAIGN ON SAFE MOTORING

NIPCO created a good platform through which tanker drivers were recognized and tutored on safety
issues on Saturday 8th December 2007 at the drivers shed within the expansive terminal. The high spate of ignorance about hazards on our roads and inability to take necessary safety precautions has been adduced as some of the causes of accident involving tanker drivers.

As a good corporate organization that is always willing to contribute its quota in ensuring high standards by its publics, the epoch making event of Saturday 8th December will forever remain evergreen in the minds of over 300 tanker drivers that were part of the event.

Facilitators at the inaugural corporate social responsibility programme for tanker drivers included the government numero uno for safety matters on the road in Nigeria-Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and private sector egg heads on safe motoring led by Otunba Toyin Abass- Chairman/CEO Logcon Consults International. The FRSC enunciated traffic rules with special reference to trucks carrying petroleum products which are prone to explosions in case of any misharps on the road.

The commission appreciated the avenue created by Nipco for such an event which they had long been looking for in view of the role of tanker drivers in petroleum products haulage in the country. Accidents involving these set of drivers have always leave tales of woes for several families, hence the need to continuously enlighten them on safety issues.
Otunba Abass on his part spoke on defensive driving and operational procedures for hitch free loading in the company.

He charged the participants to always drive to save lives, time and money. In the same view, he told the drivers to strive to recognize hazard, understand the defense, and act promptly in time to avoid collisions. The managing director Mr Girish Sanadhya in an address read on his behalf by the financial controller Mr. P.V. Shah said the organization embarked on the programme as a mark of concern for the drivers overall safety among other things.

He explained that the event is a combination of the company’s pursuit of corporate social responsibility initiatives for the overall growth of the society.

Mr. Sanadhya stressed that the fact that human factor plays a prominent role in road accident makes an enlightement programme like this very apt for the drivers. Over speeding, drunkenness, fatigue as a result of driving long distances without a break are some of the human factor problems associated with road accidents which campaign of this nature can be addressing on a regular basis.
