NIPCO BOSS ASSURES WORKERS OF SAFE ENVIRONMENT

The Managing Director of Nipco plc, a key downstream player in the oil and gas industry, Mr Girish Sanadhya has assured all categories of staff in the company of a safe and conducive working environment in line with the approved safety standards in the industry.

Mr Sanadhya made the pledge in a goodwill message to the 2day workshop on Health, Safety and Environment held at the newly commissioned training centre within its ultra modern terminal at Apapa, Lagos State.

The event, which was the brainchild of the Human Resource Department of the organization in collaboration with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), attracted several personalities including industry regulators and other stakeholders.

The workshop which had 25 participants drawn from all the departments in the organization is also in part fulfillment of the standard safety guidelines approved by the regulatory authorities in the oil and gas industry with special emphasis on the downstream sector and witnessed the presentation of several papers and practical demonstration of the awful effects of fire in the oil industry.

Mr Sanadhya asserted that management is quite aware of the hazards in the industry and would always be in the forefront of preferring measures that would mitigate the effects on its employees.

‘The challenges in the oil and gas industry is very daunting especially as it relates to lives and properties either at point of receipt or loading of petroleum products and that management is equal to the task in averting any unfortunate situation’, the MD asserted..

He noted that for employees to be able to put in their best in the assigned duties, it is imperative that a safe and conducive environment is guaranteed as this will impact positively on the overall operations in the terminal.

Mr Sanadhya stressed that Management is fully ready to stand up to its responsibility and ensure that occupational health problems are reduced or averted completely.

The MD pointed out that as part of the company’s health, safety and Environment (HSE) policy, all staff are to be routinely exposed to training programmes that will boost their level of their safety consciousness at all times.

He explained that safety is everybody business adding that this explains why no member of staff is excluded in the overall safety plain/process in the terminal.

The MD stated that as part of the safety policy of the company, staffs have been enjoined to improve on their safety records with a view to averting loss in the organization.

To him “the effect of fire or any hazard in the oil industry is always far-reaching and of high magnitude which every operator in the sector never bargain for’.

This, he noted explains why every worker has to be an ambassador of safety and imbibe a safety culture that could stand the task of time.

In his remark, the Manager fire and safety Mr Vitalis Ofoegbu said safety tit bit are always inculcated in all categories of the workforce on a daily basis to confirm the assertion that safety is everybody business.

The representative of the ITF who coordinated the event Mrs. Mary Katugwa told the participant that learning new things about the HSE doctrine will further empower them not only in their different homes adding that it is indeed an investment that must be justified.

She enjoined the participants to always see NIPCO job as theirs and whatever sacrifice needed for its continued growth in the oil and gas industry should be properly emphasized and adhered to.
