NIPCO CHARGES STAKEHOLDERS ON SAFETY AT WORK PLACES 

Nipco plc, a key operator in the downstream sector of the nations oil and gas industry has organized an intensive training programme designed at equipping participants with skills of evaluating healthy and safety conditions at company’s fully automated terminal.

The two day Health ,Safety and Environment [HSE] programme which took place at the company’s ultra modern training centre in Apapa was organized in conjunction with the Industrial Training Fund[ITF].

The capacity building initiative which attracted over 50 participants from all departments in the organization irrespective of cadres dwelt extensively on global HSE practices was in continuation of the company’s growing drive for more safety consciousness among the workforce.

Participants at the training exercise were exposed to basic requirements of the law with regards to safety like the Heath and Safety Work Act 1974.FactoriesAct 1961etc

The facilitators outlined the responsibilities of the workforce as regards what they can do that can endanger them and their establishment with a view to ensuring overall safety of the organization without jeopardizing their personal safety as well.

Participants were also told of the onerous duty of the employer of labour to provide a safe and healthy environment and the need to continue to identify environmental hazards at work with a view to minimizing or eliminating occupational illness or diseases..

Similarly employees were enjoined to ensure that any act or attitude of his does not lead to an unsafe and unhealthy situation for him and other staff in the process of performing his duties in the organization.

In the area of accident prevention , participants were educated on the various actions that can be taken that guarantee their personal safety and that of the organization as a whole.

This include among others : investigation of all accidents resulting in damage to establish the course and to initiate corrective action; identifying the cause of accidents and conditions under which they are most likely to occur.

Good record keeping and statistics which identify problem areas and unsatisfactory trends within the organization was also identified as one of the panacea towards accident prevention.

Mr Magaji Mohammed Saba .the Manager Human Resource said the programme is a follow up of the series of trainings approved by the Management to further expose the workforce to world class Health, Safety and Environmental standards for optimal utilization of the state of the earth facilities in the terminal..

He applauded the financial and moral support of the management in the realization of all the training schedules mapped out by the department in the outgoing year adding that without this all their plans in the area of human capital development would have remained a wishful thinking or at best a dream.

While pledging total commitment and loyalty to the company ,the HR chief said there wont be any cause to regret the huge sums of money been expended on staff training programmes as necessary machinery are been put in place to ensure total adherence to safety standards in the industry.

The representative of the course advisers ,the ITF, Mr Gabriel Olatunji commended the unwavering support of the company in the area of capacity development initiative with its attendant effect on the workforce productivity levels.

One of the course participants Mr Joseph Oladeji said the exercise is a good omen especially in the area of human capacity building thus creating an avenue for further appreciation of basic requirement of standard HSE practices in the oil and gas industry.
